What it is
WordPress is a open source software and that means that is totally free to use for everyone. WordPress was released on May 27, 2003, by its founders, American developer Matt Mullenweg. According to Wikipedia WordPress was originally created as a blog-publishing system but has been developed to also support other web content types including more traditional mailing lists and forums as well, media galleries, membership sites, learning management systems (LMS) and online stores. In other words. wordpress is like a factory where you can create different types of websites.
WordPress.com vs WordPress.org
I want to share with you the ups and down sides to these two free WordPress platforms. The negative sides to wordpress.com is that you can not install any plug ins that you may want to use on your WordPress blog. There are plenty of plug ins out there that could benefit your blogging and your business, but at wordpress. com you can not install any such WordPress plug ins. WordPress.org is the free platform that you should get started with but then you should get your own domain name and hosting. Although you can buy hosting and domains names at this platform , I prefer to buy these services outside WordPress. Word-press is the platform you should go for when starting blogging because it is very customizable and it has the most plug ins that you can install and use. Now, the main things is that you invest in a domain name and your own hosting to have more control over your blog. Over your blogs functions plug ins and design.
Branded to you
When choosing a domain name make sure that it is branded to your or your business or the niche that you are blogging within. Do not choose a domain name that is hard to remember in other words; do not make it way to long. And do not create a domain name with complicated spelling either. Choose a domain name that is easy to remember for your blog readers and visitors. That way you increase the chances of you getting returning visitors and maybe a new client. So choose your domain name wisely.

As I mentioned earlier in this post,I recommend that you you get a WordPress blog if you are planning to start blogging, because it is the best blog that is out there. Most bloggers are using WordPress to get their message out there on the internet. You can choose to use a free WordPress blog but somewhere down the line I advice you to invest a little sum of money so that you can get your own domain name as well as hosting.
